INTERVIEW

"I hope this song becomes my signature song."
"Marigold" is a gem of a love song that will brighten up the summer of 2018.

Aimyon's nationwide tour "AIMYON TOUR 2018 -TELEPHONE LOBSTER-" held in the spring ended with all shows sold out, and her single "Only Under the Full Moon" released in April received a good response both physically and digitally, and her past works are still AIMYON. She has started a series of interviews in "TV Bros.", which also has series with Hosono Haruomi & Hoshino Gen, Okamura Yasuyuki, Perfume, and others (the first one was with Kukki from Wild Bomb, and the second one was with Miura Jun, which is AIMYON of Aimyon), and she has written the theme song for the movie "Turn Up the Volume, Octopus! I Don't Know What You're Singing At All!!" to be released in October, sung by the heroine Yoshioka Riho, and she is becoming more and more prominent as an icon of the new generation.

AIMYON: I don't think that in this day and age you can become popular just by appearing in the media, but even so, I want to praise my songs, and I was happy that I gained more fans by appearing on TV, and that I thought, "I guess it was a good song because it appeared in the media." For the spring tour, I wanted to get people who came because they liked my songs to also like my live performance and my personality, and see how long I could hold on to them (laughs), and I think I was able to achieve that.
Of course, I still think I have a long way to go, and recently I've had many opportunities to go see various people's live shows, but I think it's good to have people around me who make me feel frustrated, like RADWIMPS, CreepHyp, and Ishizaki Huwie. I always think, "I don't want to lose," and I don't want to be satisfied. I'm afraid of getting burnout syndrome. The other day, I had a great live show in Taiwan, and I was starting to feel a little satisfied. But I felt relieved because I started writing songs as soon as I got back. "I'm not satisfied yet" (laughs).

The title of Aimyon's new summer single, released in a short span of about three months after "Only Under the Full Moon no Yorunara," is "Marigold." It is a song that resonates with people in their teens and twenties, but also appeals to the nostalgia that everyone has in their hearts, regardless of generation, and is full of AIMYON.

AIMYON: I wrote this song in September of last year, and it was because I felt that unless I wrote a song that surpassed "Kimi Wa Rock Wo Kikanai", I wouldn't be able to continue on. "Kimi Wa Rock Wo Kikanai" means a lot to me, and it was a song that was influenced by the musical style I most wanted to do, and someone I admired, so I felt like I wouldn't be able to last unless I surpassed that song. So I wrote songs almost every day, and finally this song was created. I felt that it was the best I could do, the best I could, and I thought, "I hope this song will change next year's summer."

"Marigold," which was written after the phrase "You in your straw hat look like a swaying marigold" suddenly came to him, is a gem of a love song that is both refreshing and sad. "Kimi Wa Rock Wo Kikanai" was based on the motif of a young man and woman's love affair, but the finished product allows listeners to freely superimpose their own thoughts and scenes onto it.

AIMYON: My previous songs were mostly direct descriptions, but this song is more like "I'll let you imagine!", and I think the story will change depending on the person. I think a song stays with you when the listener links their feelings to it, like "Maybe this song is about me." Lines like "The wind is a little too strong, shaking my heart, I miss you, looking at me seriously" or "I'm not strong enough to spit out all my true feelings, but strangely enough, I can't see the despair" will make the sense of distance between the two people completely different depending on the listener, so I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of reaction I get.

The sound was produced by the already familiar Yusuke Tanaka of agehasprings. From the floating intro that opens the door to memories to the twin guitar harmonies in the interlude, the song is sprinkled with impressive arrangements at key points, enhancing AIMYON 's singing and melody.

AIMYON: There are songs that I sing at live shows after saying "This is an important song," and this song has become one of those songs. To put it dramatically, it's a song that makes me think "I hope this song becomes my signature song." Even after it was finished, I've been excited about it ever since. It's not like Valentine's chocolate, but I'm excited just making it, and I'm excited to give it to someone, and I think it's a really great feeling. Up until now, I've been pretty much like "next, next," but I've been excited about this song ever since it was made, and now I want to sing it at a festival soon (laughs).

This summer, they will be appearing at many festivals and events, including "ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL", "SUMMER SONIC", and Spitz's "Rock Rock Konnichiwa!". one man tour" AIMYON TOUR 2018 -HONEY LADY BABY-" will begin in November and the venue capacity will be expanded dramatically, with the tour finale scheduled to be held at Zepp Tokyo.

AIMYON: This year, I'm grateful that I've been invited to many festivals that I couldn't perform at last year. Last year, I was a little arrogant, like, "Festivals are for bands to perform, and I'm a singer-songwriter, so it's only natural that I can't perform," and "I'm not interested in festivals"... Looking back, it's kind of lame (laughs), but honestly, I may have been a little frustrated. But this year, I'm able to perform at a lot of festivals, so rather than the passion of my performance, I want to compete with the passion of my songs. In the midst of all of that, I want to get the confidence that I can continue to work as a musician.
